Villa Erba: The Night Fox's Lake Como Lair

A 19th century lakeside palace, Luchino Visconti's childhood summers, and the most elegant villain's address in heist cinema.

On the Cernobbio shore of Lake Como stands the address every gentleman thief in cinema wishes he had. Villa Erba was completed in the 1890s for the family of pharmaceutical magnate Carlo Erba, a wedding-cake palace of frescoed ceilings and lakeside lawns, and film royalty is in its actual bloodline: the director Luchino Visconti, grandson of the family, spent childhood summers there and later called it a place he did some of his best thinking.

The Ocean's Twelve role

In Ocean's Twelve the villa plays the home of François Toulour, the Night Fox, the European master thief who challenges Danny Ocean's crew. The location does half the character's work: a man introduced lounging beside that lake, in that garden, does not need dialogue to establish that money stopped being the point generations ago. The Como setting also carried an in-joke the production enjoyed: George Clooney's own villa sits a few kilometres up the same shoreline in Laglio, making the Night Fox, geographically speaking, Danny Ocean's neighbour.

Visiting the real thing

Villa Erba is not a residence today but an exhibition and events centre, hosting everything from vintage car concours to trade fairs, and its park opens for events across the season. It is a reminder of the truth running through this whole section: the movies borrow real places because no set dresser can fake a century of patina. The same rule, the Bandit notes, applies to casinos: operating history is the patina that matters, and it cannot be painted on.
