No-Deposit vs Deposit Bonuses: What's the Difference?

One needs a deposit and one does not. That is where the simple part ends.

Casino bonuses come in several forms, but two of the most common are deposit bonuses and no-deposit bonuses.

The difference sounds straightforward. One requires a deposit and the other does not. The conditions attached to each, though, can vary considerably.

Here is how I size up both, so you can see what you are actually being offered before you accept.

What is a deposit bonus?

A deposit bonus requires a qualifying deposit before the casino awards the promotional funds.

A common example is a 100% match up to C$200. Deposit C$100 and the casino may add C$100 in bonus funds. Deposit C$200 and it may add another C$200, subject to the promotion's maximum.

The bonus is then usually subject to wagering requirements and other conditions.

Deposit bonuses come in several forms, including:

The percentage is only one part of the deal. The terms decide how the bonus can actually be used.

What is a no-deposit bonus?

A no-deposit bonus does not require a qualifying cash deposit to receive the promotional reward.

A casino might offer a small amount of bonus funds or free spins for registering an eligible account, although the exact requirements depend on the promotion.

No-deposit offers can be a way to try a promotion without first putting your own money into the casino.

But "no deposit" does not mean "no conditions."

Why no-deposit bonuses can look attractive

The obvious attraction is that no initial deposit is required. That can make a small no-deposit bonus look appealing next to a promotion asking for a larger deposit.

There may be restrictions on how the bonus works, though. The casino may require the bonus to be wagered a certain number of times before any associated winnings become eligible for withdrawal, and there could also be a maximum cashout.

A C$10 no-deposit bonus with a C$50 maximum withdrawal is a very different proposition from a C$10 bonus with no promotional cashout limit.

Deposit bonuses can offer larger rewards

Deposit promotions can provide considerably more bonus funds because they are linked to the amount deposited. A 100% match up to C$500 potentially provides more promotional funds than a small no-deposit offer.

The larger bonus can also come with a larger wagering requirement. Suppose a C$500 bonus has a 30x requirement. If the multiplier applies to the bonus alone:

C$500 x 30 = C$15,000

That is why the size of a bonus should never be considered separately from its conditions.

What about wagering?

Wagering requirements matter with both types of promotion. Before accepting an offer, check:

A no-deposit offer can carry tougher conditions than a deposit bonus, despite looking smaller and simpler. If the multiplier maths is new to you, start with Wagering Requirements, Decoded.

Check the maximum cashout

Maximum cashout rules deserve particular attention on no-deposit promotions. Some offers limit the amount that can be withdrawn from winnings generated with the promotional funds.

A no-deposit bonus might provide C$10 in bonus funds but specify a C$50 maximum cashout.

That does not necessarily make the promotion poor. It means the restriction has to be part of how you assess its value.

What about free spins?

Free spins can appear alongside both deposit and no-deposit promotions. The details that matter:

The same principle applies when comparing mobile slots with desktop play. If the promotion is available across platforms, check whether the conditions stay the same regardless of where the game is played. More on that in How Do Casino Free Spins Work?

Which type is better?

There is no single answer that covers every promotion.

A no-deposit bonus may have a smaller headline value but need no initial deposit. A deposit bonus may provide considerably more promotional funds but demand a larger amount of wagering.

The only useful comparison is between the actual terms. Look at the reward, wagering requirement, game contribution, expiry, maximum bet and withdrawal rules before deciding whether a promotion is worth considering.

The Bandit's take

"Deposit" and "no deposit" describe how a bonus is activated. They tell you nothing about whether the promotion offers good value.

Whether you are browsing slots online or looking at another casino game, the same rule applies: read the conditions before judging the offer.

A bonus is not just the amount printed on the banner. It is the reward plus the rules attached to it, which is why every poster on the Loot Board carries both.

19+ (18+ in AB, MB and QC). Bonuses are entertainment with a price attached, never an income. Play it straight.
