Casino Wagering Requirements Explained
The number next to the x is the most quoted and least understood figure in this business. Here is how to actually calculate it.
Wagering requirements are the most important part of any casino bonus. They are also the easiest part to misread.
A casino can advertise a generous welcome offer, but the wagering requirement is what decides how much betting activity stands between you and a withdrawal. Understanding that calculation changes which promotions look attractive and which ones quietly do not.
What is a wagering requirement?
A wagering requirement is a condition attached to a bonus that requires you to wager a specified amount before that bonus converts into withdrawable funds.
It is normally shown as a multiplier: 10x, 20x, 35x, 50x.
Take a C$100 bonus with a 35x wagering requirement. The basic calculation is:
C$100 x 35 = C$3,500
So C$3,500 in qualifying wagers, if the 35x applies to the C$100 bonus.
That is only one of the possible calculations.
What does the multiplier apply to?
This is the detail worth finding before anything else in the terms.
A casino may calculate wagering against the bonus amount, or against the deposit plus bonus. Consider a C$100 deposit with a C$100 bonus.
If the requirement is 35x the bonus:
C$100 x 35 = C$3,500
If it is 35x the deposit plus bonus:
C$200 x 35 = C$7,000
The advertised multiplier has not changed. The work has doubled.
That is why reading only the number next to the x is how players talk themselves into offers they would otherwise skip.
Do all casino games count?
No.
Different games carry different contribution rates. A casino may allow certain games to contribute 100% while others contribute a fraction, or nothing at all.
Slot-style games often get full contribution while table games are assigned lower percentages, but the exact rules vary between promotions and there is no universal rate that applies everywhere.
This matters because a C$100 wager does not necessarily add C$100 to your progress. If a game contributes 10%, that C$100 wager counts as C$10 toward the requirement. Ten times the work, same money through the machine.
Check the eligible-game list before you play through a bonus, not after.
Why slots usually matter here
Slots frequently receive favourable contribution rates in bonus terms, though the exact conditions still depend on the promotion. That covers everything from a traditional online slot machine to modern video slots and the rest of the online casino games in the lobby.
Even when a whole category contributes fully, individual titles are sometimes excluded. The safe approach is to check the specific promotion rather than assume every game qualifies.
The same principle applies to Canadian slots. The name or category of a game tells you nothing about how much it contributes to a particular bonus.
What happens if you do not complete the requirement?
The wagering requirement normally has to be completed before bonus-related funds become available for withdrawal, and there is usually a deadline attached.
If a bonus expires before the requirement is met, the remaining bonus and its associated conditions may be removed under the terms of that offer. Timeframes vary considerably: some promotions give you several days, others allow longer.
Some terms also spell out what happens if you withdraw before completing the requirement. In some cases an unfinished bonus is forfeited entirely.
What is a good wagering requirement?
There is no multiplier that automatically makes a bonus good or bad.
20x sounds better than 40x, but the multiplier is one input among several. Check:
- What amount is being multiplied?
- Which games contribute?
- How much does each game contribute?
- Is there a maximum bet?
- How long do you have?
- Is there a maximum withdrawal?
- What happens if you withdraw early?
- Are there separate requirements for free-spin winnings?
A low multiplier wrapped in restrictive terms is not better than a slightly higher one with room to move.
How to calculate the real requirement
Before accepting any bonus, write down three numbers: deposit, bonus, and wagering multiplier. Then work out what the multiplier actually applies to.
For example, a C$150 deposit with a C$150 bonus.
If wagering is 30x the bonus:
C$150 x 30 = C$4,500
If wagering is 30x the deposit plus bonus:
C$300 x 30 = C$9,000
Thirty seconds of arithmetic separates two promotions that looked identical on the banner.

Do not let the multiplier make the decision for you. A bonus saying 25x is not automatically good, and one saying 40x is not automatically bad.
The question is what that multiplier is actually attached to. Before depositing, check the calculation, the eligible games, the contribution rates, the expiry, the maximum bet and the withdrawal conditions.
