Bonus-Only vs Deposit + Bonus Wagering Explained

Understand the difference between bonus-only and deposit plus bonus wagering, with examples showing how each requirement is calculated.

One of the most important details in a casino promotion is also one of the easiest to misunderstand: what does the wagering multiplier apply to?

A promotion might advertise a 35x wagering requirement, for example. But that doesn't tell you whether the casino calculates the requirement using the bonus alone or the deposit and bonus together.

Those two calculations can produce very different results.

Here's how the difference works.

What Is Bonus-Only Wagering?

With bonus-only wagering, the multiplier applies only to the promotional bonus.

Let's say you deposit C$100 and receive a C$100 bonus.

If the promotion has a 35x requirement on the bonus only:

C$100 × 35 = C$3,500

The C$100 deposit isn't multiplied.

The player therefore needs C$3,500 in qualifying wagering to complete the requirement, assuming the terms specify that calculation.

What Is Deposit + Bonus Wagering?

With deposit + bonus wagering, the multiplier applies to the combined amount.

Using the same example:

C$100 deposit + C$100 bonus = C$200

At 35x:

C$200 × 35 = C$7,000

The wagering requirement is therefore twice as large.

That's a major difference even though the promotional headline could simply say "35x wagering."

Why Does This Matter?

Because the multiplier alone doesn't tell you the actual size of the requirement.

Consider these two offers:

Offer AC$100 deposit
C$100 bonus
35x bonus wagering
Requirement: C$3,500

Offer BC$100 deposit
C$100 bonus
35x deposit + bonus wagering
Requirement: C$7,000

Both advertise a C$100 bonus and 35x wagering.

But Offer B requires C$3,500 more in qualifying wagers.

This is exactly the sort of detail the Bonus Bandit looks for when comparing promotions.

What About a Different Bonus Percentage?

The same calculation applies when the bonus is larger.

Imagine a C$200 deposit with a 50% bonus.

The casino provides C$100 in bonus funds.

With 30x bonus-only wagering:

C$100 × 30 = C$3,000

With 30x wagering on the combined deposit and bonus:

C$300 × 30 = C$9,000

The difference becomes substantial.

The larger the deposit and bonus, the more important the calculation becomes.

Game Contribution Still Matters

The calculated wagering requirement is only the starting point.

You also need to check how different games contribute.

Suppose your requirement is C$3,000.

If an eligible game contributes 100%, C$100 in wagers could potentially add C$100 to your progress.

If another game contributes 20%, the same C$100 wager might contribute only C$20.

Some games may not contribute at all.

This means the practical difficulty of completing the requirement depends on both the multiplier and the games available.

Don't Forget the Maximum Bet

Maximum bet restrictions can also apply while completing the requirement.

A promotion could have a relatively reasonable wagering calculation but impose a maximum permitted bet of C$5.

That restriction can affect how quickly a player can work through the required wagering.

Always consider the multiplier and maximum bet together.

What About the Deposit?

Another common misunderstanding is assuming that the deposit itself becomes restricted simply because it was used to qualify for a bonus.

The treatment of the deposit depends on the casino's terms.

Some promotions may allow the deposited funds to be withdrawn subject to specific conditions, while others may require wagering or impose additional rules.

Don't assume that "deposit + bonus" wagering means the casino has simply converted the deposit into bonus money.

It refers specifically to how the wagering requirement is calculated.

How Do You Find Out Which Calculation Applies?

Look for wording such as:

The exact wording matters.

If the terms aren't clear, contact the casino before accepting the promotion.

It is much easier to understand the calculation before accepting an offer than to discover the difference after wagering has already begun.

The Bonus Bandit's Comparison

Here's the simplest way to remember the difference:

Wagering basisDepositBonusMultiplierRequirement
Bonus onlyC$100C$10035xC$3,500
Deposit + bonusC$100C$10035xC$7,000

Same deposit. Same bonus. Same multiplier.

Very different wagering requirement.

The Bonus Bandit's Take

When you see a casino bonus advertised with a wagering multiplier, don't stop at the number.

Find out exactly what the multiplier applies to.

A 35x requirement on a C$100 bonus means C$3,500 in wagering. The same 35x requirement applied to a C$100 deposit plus C$100 bonus means C$7,000.

That difference can completely change how attractive a promotion looks.

The multiplier tells you how many times. The wagering basis tells you how much.

19+ (18+ in AB, MB and QC). Play it straight.
